The most common species of fleas in the UK are human fleas, cat fleas, dog fleas and bird fleas. While all of these fleas have a preferred host animal, as their name suggests, they will bite different species if they need to feed. So, a cat flea might bite a human, for example. The best way to prevent fleas is to be vigilant, and make sure your pets are well groomed. Wash your pet bedding and anywhere your pets sleep, such as human beds and sofas, regularly in hot water. If you don’t have a pet, fleas can still make their way into your space inside used soft furnishings or clothing. Wash any secondhand clothes or furniture thoroughly before use to reduce the chances of a flea infestation.
